Human and Ocean Safe Sunscreen


There are many products out there that are damaging to the body and many products that are damaging to the environment. I went through both to find a sunscreen that is OK for the body as well as the environment.

Sunscreens use a chemical block and a mineral block. The most common sunscreen chemical, oxybenzone, was found in 96% of the population. Oxybenzone is considered to be an endocrine disruptor, can reduce sperm count in men and may contribute to endometriosis in women. It has been linked to DNA damage linked to cancer and developmental deformities. Methylisothiazolinone, a preservative, is a toxic ingredient that can cause skin burns, nerve damage and allergic reactions.

Oxybenzone causes deformations in juvenile coral and leads to coral bleaching. The normal coral bleaching temperature goes from 81.7 degrees F to 78 degrees F in the presence of oxybenzone. Preservatives such as methyl paraben and butyl paraben, or phenoxyethanol are known fish anesthetic.
