Since 2015, Stream2Sea is the first and only reef friendly mineral sunscreen that has been tested and proven to be safe for fish and coral larvae. The natural, hypoallergenic skin care contain no harmful chemicals like benzophenones, oxybenzone, avobenzone, parabens, DEAs/ MEAs/ TEAs, SLS or SLES and preservatives. Creating biodegradable skin care, reducing our plastic waste, and partnering and contributing to 1% for the Planet, the Coral Restoration Foundation, Reef Check, NAUI’s Green Diver Initiative and many other eco-conscious non-profits is Stream2Sea’s way of giving back.
Stream2Sea has been named Stream TO Sea to emphasize the fact that all waterways are connected. Many people claim to use “reef safe” sunscreen when swimming near reefs but when chemicals from shampoo, leave in conditioners, sunscreen, and moisturizers are introduced to freshwater systems it affects the ocean as well. Stream2Sea’s mission is to protect all waterways.
Sunscreen sits on the surface of the water, exposing insects at high concentrations. Sunscreen agents have also been found to affect reproduction in fish by mimicking the hormone estrogen. Nanoparticles of titanium dioxide, copper oxide, zinc oxide and cerium oxide that are added to sunscreen to block harmful ultraviolet rays are harmful to small aquatic organisms.
“We are 100 percent sure that this sunscreen from Stream2Sea is safe for humans, fish and rivers.”
Frisby, Owner of the Tube Shack
Sunscreen used anywhere in the world ends up in our waterways. Sunscreen gets washed down the drain in the shower and finds its way to the wastewater treatment facility where it bypasses to the open water. Wastewater treatment facilities are designed to remove organic material, allowing chemicals, hormones, pharmaceuticals, and personal care ingredients to reach waterways. Researchers have found detectable levels of UV chemicals in lakes, oceans, and rivers around the world.
There are no federal regulations defining the use of the words “natural” or “green” pertaining to biodegradable sunscreens. Here are a list of ingredients to avoid:
- Benzophenone-3, also know as Oxybenzone
- Avobenzone, also a benzophenone
- Cylcopentasiloxane / Cyclomethicone
- Formaldehyde, Diazolidinyl urea, Quaternium-15, DMDM Hydantoin and Hydroxymethylglycinate
- Homosalate
- Methylisothiazolinone
- Microbeads
- Nano particles
- Octocrylene
- Octinoxate / Octyl methoxycinnamate
- Parabens
- Phthalates
- Quaternium-15
- Retinyl Palmitate
- Sodium lauryl and laureth sulfate (SLS/SLES)
- Zinc Oxide
All products in the Stream2Sea line have passed an extensive range of tests – from microscopic C. elegans and freshwater fish to sensitive coral larva in the Florida Keys. Many companies claim to be reef-safe, and some of which are and some aren’t because ‘reef-safe’ is not a government-regulated term. Stream2Sea has done the rigorous, expensive, scientific work to prove that their formulations are safe for waters, making them the marine professionals choice and hopefully yours too.
Our mission is to supply outdoor lovers with products that work great, keep them feeling good and healthy, and give them confidence they are supporting a safe, sustainable, and science-based company.
