Having a hard time figuring out how to talk to your young ones about all the terrible things happening in the world? I was contemplating asking my son if he wanted to go to a protest, but I felt I needed to give some background first. I created a resource that outlines what happened with Christian Cooper, Ahmaud Arbery, and George Floyd.
My 12 year old son brought up George Floyd to me. I do not watch the news with them and we haven’t gone out of the house much since COVID so I hadn’t brought it up yet. He came to me telling me about the images he saw on youtube and social media. I asked him what he saw and then asked him how he felt about it. I told him what I knew.
After I spoke with my son I thought a lot about it. I saw a lot of posts online about how to talk to kids about what was happening. I felt my privilege in the moment of even deciding how I should address this. Many parents don’t have an option in terms of how and when to bring it up with their children. I decided to create a resource that I could use with my own kids and that I can share with other parents as a resource. I wanted children to hear the facts and be able to come up with their own opinions and express their own thoughts without adults telling them what or how to feel. At the end of the facts and sharing I state some things children can do if they feel they would like their voice to be heard to create equality among all people. These include, going to a peaceful protest, speaking up for anyone you see being treated unfairly, getting to know people before creating opinions about them, get to know as many different types of people as you can, read books and watch movies that teach you about different cultures.
This is not the first time I have brought this topic up but it is the first time I used examples in real time. Due to COVID and being able to see a lot of the school work my 6th grader has, I noticed a lot of material around slavery. I feel if we are going to create an idea of equality in the next generation we should teach and display those equalities in schools as opposed to heavily weighing the times of inequality. Wouldn’t it be great if schools showcased the great influences black lives have brought to cultures and the strengths among them instead of assigning an inequality to races beginning in early elementary years??
Many kids feel fear in hearing these stories because they have been taught to trust police. I think this is why some parents are highlighting the good that can be found in police but I also feel this does not acknowledge the truth in what is happening to POC. I explained to my kids that while most people are “good”, there are always some who are not and these people can be found in any profession. It is the job of the helpers to make sure these people who are doing the wrong thing get stopped.
The conversation with my kids led to talking about if they have ever witnessed anyone being treated unfairly in school because of the color of their skin or being different than others. We talked about what to do if they ever did see this happen and the importance of speaking up against it. We did some role playing of some things they might say if someone was being treated unfairly. I have a travel blog and find travel to be a great resource to teaching the beauty of diversity to children. Long Island is extremely segregated with very little diversity in my own kids school. We can never fully understand the life another person experiences, but we can get closer to that understanding by experiencing and seeing different people and different ways of living.
